THE police station at Bearlands will not be bulldozed when officers move to their new base.

Gloucestershire Constabulary plans to transfer staff to a new purpose-built base in Eastern Avenue.

It rents its current city centre site from Gloucestershire County Council and says it is rundown and would cost too much to renovate.

County bosses have now said that they will move their staff into the building when police leave.

Director of property Andrew McCartney confirmed: "We won't be bulldozing Bearlands.

"We've been saving taxpayers' money by closing out of town offices and bringing staff back into Shire Hall, so we can use the space.

"At the minute we've had no formal notice from the police that they wish to leave."

It moved out of the old Eastern Avenue fire station in 2012 and said it had "no further use for the site". Mr McCartney said: "We were happy to sell it to the police, allowing us to raise money to use elsewhere."

The sum paid for the Eastern Avenue site has not been revealed and neither has an estimated cost for building the new police station.

Councillor Tarren Randle (C, Barnwood) said she was not concerned about police moving into her ward.

"I don't think leaving the city centre will affect policing in Gloucester."

She said the departure was a chance to improve the Bearlands site and it would be a good area for housing.

Police and Crime Commissioner Martin Surl has now revealed the new base will not have any police cells.

Instead plans are forging ahead to build 50 cells next to the constabulary's headquarters at Waterwells.

Bearlands gets on average 30 visitors a day and Mr Surl said that an empty shop may be used to create a police point in the city centre.

He said this would help to maintain contact with the public.

Gloucester Chief Inspector Richard Burge said: "Bearlands is no longer fit for purpose so all the officers here are very happy and looking forward to moving to what will be a great new facility.

"Of course, policing is about people rather than buildings.

"I can reassure everyone that our officers will continue to be on the beat in the city and our local policing teams more visible than ever before."
