POLICE officers were left puzzled last night after spending more than an hour searching for a man in Cheltenham.
Gloucestershire Constabulary received reports from members of the public about a man in dark clothing who was stumbling about on Hyde Lane, towards Swindon Village in Cheltenham.
It was reported around 8.20pm last night that the man had fallen into a hedge, and could not be found.
Officers were sent with dogs to search for him, and a helicopter from the Western Counties Air Operations Unit was also engaged to help with the incident.
Inspector Andy Morford, from Gloucestershire Constabulary, said they could not find him.
He added: "We searched the area, and there were no signs of him. The helicopter couldn't find him, and our police officers also searched for him.
"We checked the road, ditches, hedges, and the whole area. It is one of those things.
"We have done what we can to establish that there was nobody there. He must have made his way away."
The search was called off after more than an hour.
