MP sitting on asbestos in schools panel

STROUD MP Neil Carmichael was among politicians about to investigate the dangers of asbestos in school buildings.

The Tory sits on the commons' Education Committee which is to hear evidence on the issue.

The one-off session today comes as the Government continues to develop its policies in relation to illness possibly caused to teachers and pupils' exposed to asbestos dust in classrooms.

Witnesses were to include campaigner Michael Lees from the Asbestos in Schools Group and schools' minister David Laws and Health and Safety Executive give evidence.

Katharine Lady Berkeley's School in Wotton-under-Edge has previously been identified as likely to need work to remove asbestos.

A spokeswoman from the Gloucestershire County Council said asbestos did not pose a risk unless it was disturbed.

"We help schools keep accurate records to make sure it is treated properly and safely," she said.

"Everyone knows chools built in the 1960s and 1970s often have asbestos in them."
