The former coroner for Gloucestershire has been charged with fraud and theft offences totalling more than £2 million.
Alan Crickmore was first arrested by Gloucestershire Police in January 2011 after a probe into the activities of his law firm.
A spokesman for the constabulary confirmed this morning the 56-year-old had been charged with the offences.
Mr Crickmore from East Approach Drive in Cheltenham faces charges of 12 counts of theft, seven counts of fraud by abuse of position and one count of fraud by false representation.
The spokesman said: "The charges follow the formal launch of a police investigation in January 2011 into matters under investigation by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA).
"The total amount of money alleged to have been stolen or defrauded is in excess of £2 million pounds."
He has been bailed to appear at Cheltenham Magistrates Court on Tuesday, April 9.
