ROAD safety campaigners gained extra police support when a special Fatal Four operation stopped drivers in Moreton Valence.

It came the month after villagers and parish councillors earlier launched Moreton Valence Action for Road Safety and lined up scarecrows next to the busy A38 to slow traffic.

Gloucestershire police stopped 60 vehicles in a day on the 60mph stretch to highlight the Fatal Four – driving after drinking, without a seatbelt or while using a phone and speeding.

Campaigner and parish councillor Lyn Bushell said: "Accidents are a big issue for us. In the past 10 years we have had 35 collisions, 52 casualties and two fatalities."

Since MARS was launched villagers Richard and Caroline Hanman have had their home hit by a skidding car.

A huge crack was left in their living room wall.

Ms Bushell said it was the third time a car had come off the road and hit the house.

PCSO Mark Lifton said weather conditions on the day of the police operation were poor because it was raining.

A car was found running on red diesel, which can only be used by agricultural vehicles, and the driver fined £600.

Three other vehicles had no insurance and were seized.

Fixed penalty notices for driving without a seatbelt were issued to three motorists, PCSO Lifton said.

Another vehicle was picked up by a automatic number plate recognition camera for being involved in a burglary.

"The vehicle was stopped by police and seized and all the people in it were arrested," said PCSO Lifton.

The road policing operation monitored traffic between the Cross Keys and Fromebridge Mill along the A38 and through Moreton Valence.

Police used three marked cars and three unmarked and, later in the day, there was also assistance from the armed response unit.

PCSO Lifton said HM Customs and Excise were also involved.
