Stevenage midfielder Robin Shroot gave Byron Harrison a gentle nudge in Cheltenham Town's direction.
Shroot, who spent half a season with the Robins in 2010/11, was also consulted by Mark Yates as part of his research into the striker, who joined Cheltenham for a five-figure sum on deadline day.
Harrison and Shroot grew up in the same area of South London and played together for Harrow Borough five years ago.
They also spent time in the same Stevenage side before Harrison joined the Dons last January.
Such was the last-minute nature of Harrison's switch on Thursday, he was unable to undergo a medical, so Yates was quizzing as many people as he could about the 6ft 3ins front man's fitness history, including Stevenage's physio and Shroot.
"Mark Yates phoned me about Byron and I told him that he's got a good one," Shroot said.
"I also sang Yatesey's praises to Byron and I actually tried to persuade him to sign for Cheltenham when they last went in for him."
Shroot described Harrison as an all-rounder, who will offer a bit of everything for Cheltenham in their League Two promotion push and for the next two seasons at least.
"On his day Byron is unplayable and he will score goals for fun in League Two," Shroot said.
"He has a good first touch and good awareness so he'll look after the ball when it's played in to him, but he can also run in behind and he's deceptively quick.
"I have not seen many players like him because he is good in the air and on the floor technically too."
Harrison made his Robins debut as a substitute in Saturday's 2-1 home victory over Torquay United.
