THE BRITISH spirit has been captured in print and photos in a glossy new book launched by Cheltenham Borough Council.
The Diamond Jubilee in Cheltenham captures images of celebrations throughout the town, and starts with the Olympic torch being carried by the Queen's granddaughter and Cotswold resident, Zara Philips.
The commemorative book was produced by the borough council in partnership with local photographers who worked voluntarily.
It also features some of the town's history and artwork, together with photographs and poems contributed by residents.
Councillor Colin Hay, Mayor of Cheltenham, wrote in the foreword that it showed how the community had come together.
He wrote: "Having spoken to many mayors over the years, they all say it's a great privilege and honour to be mayor - and great fun!
"But to be mayor in 2012 is even better with so much going on, the Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics.
"Rain sadly was a feature of the summer - but it wasn't going to put poeple off.
"That stoical British spirit shone through, and folk were determined to celebrate and have fun, with Union Jack flags, clothes, hats, tights, bags, umbrellas and just about anything else that could be made from the flag or simply red, white and blue."
