Around 7,000 fish have been lifted out of a Cheltenham lake in a major operation.Pittville Park's upper lake resident population of roach and carp was getting a little crowded.And, as overstocked ponds and lakes can see disease spreading easily and experts noticed older residents were suffering stunted growth, help was needed.Cheltenham Borough Council's community ranger Janice Payne has now come to the rescue.She enlisted the help of fishery experts from Melton Mowbray who descended on the park to rehome around 50 per cent of the stock."A few years ago we had a lot of fish that died because the lake was overstocked and we were worried that it might happen again," she said."So we took as many fish out as we could and we will do the same again every couple of years."There's a constant supply of new fish and a study of them showed that they are healthy."See Saturday's copy of the Gloucestershire Echo to find out what happens to the rehomed fish.
