Cheltenham Town have signed midfielder Jason Taylor from Rotherham United on a two-and-a-half year deal. Former Stockport County and Rochdale man Taylor, who turned 26 today, has arrived on a free transfer from the Robins' League Two promotion rivals. Robins boss Mark Yates said: "I am absolutely delighted to sign Jason and with the length of the contract particularly. "As soon as he became available I wanted him. I met with him a couple of times and I wanted to sign him even more. "He is a winner, a leader and he knows the game." The combative Taylor has shone in matches against Cheltenham in the past for both Rochdale and Rotherham and he scored in the Millers' 1-1 draw at Whaddon Road in April 2011. He was also influential in Rochdale's 4-1 win at Cheltenham in January 2010 and Rotherham's 6-4 victory at the Don Valley in August that year. Ashton-born Taylor passed a medical earlier this afternoon and immediately penned his contract. He will go straight into the squad for Saturday's home match against Torquay United. Taylor began his career as a trainee at Oldham Athletic before joining Stockport in August 2006. Yates is also thought to be close to bringing in Swindon Town striker Paul Benson on loan for the rest of the season.
