Snow joke - life in the Forest of Dean has many benefits but...

"IT'S falling thick and fast," said councillor Jane Horne in the middle of a heated debate on car parking on Thursday.

That's when I knew the prospects of me getting into work yesterday looked bleak.

I awoke yesterday morning at 6am to find a thick blanket of the white stuff coating the Forest of Dean, and more of it was falling, like Mrs Horne said, thick and fast.

Living out in the Forest at the bottom of a steep country lane has its benefits. It is beautiful and offers a real serene escape from my more than busy lifestyle. However, there is a down side too. When there is even the merest sprinkling of snow I find myself totally cut off from the outside world. Now, with the internet being what it is, I can work from home luckily and I can stay in contact with the world.

But, driving anywhere is a big no no. Just two years ago an attempt to get to work in the morning resulted in a £500 bill to repair my car after smashing into a curb following a hasty decent down an icy stretch of road.

Never again. Lesson learned. Stay home, stay safe and wait it out, in the beautiful, if isolated, surroundings of the Forest of Dean.
