Struggling music store HMV has called in the administrators today.
The news puts some 4,350 jobs at risk if a buyer can't be found.
People in Gloucester have reacted with sadness at the news.
Natalie Newman, from Quedgeley, said: "I get all my music from HMV. I prefer CDs to downloads because it's a physical product.
"I try to stay away from companies like Amazon so it is really sad."
Simon Andrews, from London Road, said: "There's still something to be said for buying CDs from the high street but HMV wouldn't be my first choice – other shops are cheaper.
"I'm not surprised about it – it's been on the cards for a long time. They tried to change but it obviously hasn't worked."
Kel Richards, from Gloucester, said: "HMV is not ideal for me. I'd never buy from there because the online prices are always better."
Customers with gift cards are out of luck – they are no longer being accepted.
The Gloucester branch is next door to Jessops, which closed just days earlier, and it has launched a 25 per cent sale.
The administrators Deloitte said yesterday that they intend to keep all 238 stores trading while they look for a buyer for the business.
