SMOKE alarms should be regularly checked - or homeowners are risking their family's lives warn Gloucestershire fire chiefs.
Fire safety in the home has been placed at the top of the campaign list to be run by Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue service this year.
Quitting smoking and joining a gym may be at the top of most people's new year resolutions, but the service is calling on more checks on smoke alarms to be made.
Station Commander Jeff Neathway, Head of Community Safety, said: "At this time of year, many will be thinking of what they can do - big or small - to make a fresh start and improve their lives, homes and wellbeing.
"A smoke alarm can offer vital protection for you and your loved ones, but most people simply fit and forget – they don't know if it might be coming to the end of its lifespan.
The service offers free home fire safety checks – with free smoke alarms available where needed. And, though the majority of homes now have alarms fitted, most people aren't aware that the average smoke alarm has a lifespan of just 10 years. Please call 0800 180 41 40 to arrange for a free check.
Gloucestershire County Council Cabinet member for communities Will Windsor-Clive said: "January is the perfect time to start routines that will improve your health and wellbeing over the course of the year.
"But can there be any more important decision to make than one that keeps your family safe at home?
"Make sure this is the year that fire safety becomes a priority – for the sake of your loved ones."
The advice is simple, but it could be a lifesaver:
• Test your smoke alarm by pushing the button regularly
• Check the packaging for your smoke alarm to make sure it's still up to date
• Make sure there is at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home
• Fit smoke alarms on landings and hallways and in rooms which have an electrical appliance
• Take a moment to check on less able friends and family to ensure they're fully protected
