MEMORIES of one of Britain's worst sporting disasters have been sparked by a new report into the tragedy.

The uncle of Echo sports writer and Liverpool fan Peter Orchard was at the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, which saw 96 Liverpool fans killed.

Yesterday the Hillsborough Independent Panel published its report into the tragedy, which proves the police were to blame.

The report also found 116 of the 164 police statements identified had been altered and found 41 people out of 96 "had the potential to be saved".

Prime Minister David Cameron has offered a "profound" apology to the families.

Peter was among 140,000 people who signed an e-petition last year to force a Commons debate on the disaster.

He said: "Even now my uncle finds it difficult to speak about Hillsborough.

"The fact is 96 innocent people went to a football match at an unsafe stadium and never came home, and until yesterday, nobody said sorry for that."
