Nailsworth Naval officer Reed, who won gold at the Beijing Games in 2008 and at London 2012, was answering questions on The Lord of the Rings trilogy of films.
He answered nine questions correctly on Peter Jackson's blockbuster movies, knowing Shelob was a spider and the Rohan king was Theoden.
But he failed to answer a question about who found the ring before being killed by Smeagol.
After the final general knowledge round, Reed finished joint second on 21 points along with Silent Witness actress Jaye Griffiths.
The winner with 22 points was magician and presenter Peter Firman with 22 points. In last place was Flog It! presenter Paul Martin.
During the show, broadcast tonight on BBC1 on BBC1, Reed showed presenter John Humphrys his two gold medals and said he was hoping to go for a third at Rio 2016.
