Ambulance crews were kept busy on New Year's Eve and into the early hours of this morning, dealing with all kinds of incidents, many of which were alcohol related.

The Great Western Ambulance Service, which covers Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Avon, received 1,101 calls, a nine per cent increase on an average Monday evening.

A spokesman for GWAS said: "During an average Tuesday morning, between the hours of midnight and 3am, we would receive about 79 calls; this morning the counter quickly hit 467 in the same period, the emergency call handlers, dispatchers and clinicians in the control rooms all stepped up and demonstrated a high level of professionalism.

"By 5.45am we had taken our 675th call, nearly three quarters of a normal 24 hours' work for GWAS, in comparison to the same time frame last year where we took 629 calls.

"Ambulance Crews across Avon, Gloucester and Wiltshire have worked solidly for many hours responding to those in need.

"It is said every year, but this year has truly been the busiest year in a while."
