JUST two cameras, in Dursley and Alvington, account for 80 per cent of all drivers flashed for speeding in the county.
At least that was the case last year when cameras on the A4135 Kingshill (690) and on the A48 (424) made up 1,114 of the total 1,396 incidents of drivers being flashed by fixed speed cameras.
Curiously, the camera in Dursley clocked just 16 offences in 2010 and zero in the two previous years.
The one in Alvington has been somewhat more consistent with figures of 354 in 2010, 132 in 2009, and 243 in 2008.
Stroud district councillor Brian Marsh (LD, Dursley) said some drivers treat Kinsghill Road like a racetrack.
"The figure doesn't surprise me, as there are some younger drivers who go much too fast through the town," he said.
Jimmy Martin founded community project Time and Place in the Forest of Dean after 19 young motorists died in 2005.
He said: "If you take speed cameras away we would have a lot more problems on our hands."
Garry Handley, of the Gloucestershire Road Safety Partnership, said: "Cameras and the enforcement of speed limits do work to improve road safety and the site at Dursley is close to a large school, shops and a residential area that need to be protected from the minority of drivers who exceed the speed limit."
Some cameras have not recorded any speeding drivers at all in the past five years.
And in September it was revealed that 35 per cent of the county's speed cameras are not being used.
