AN ELDERLY couple received a rude awakening when a lorry crashed into their home in the early hours yesterday.

The lorry left the A40 at about 5am near to the Whittington junction before hitting the house.

The heavy goods vehicle became wedged in the side of the property.

Gloucestershire police closed the road for almost an hour while it was removed with the help of fire fighters.

Nobody inside the house was hurt in the incident.

However, the driver of the lorry received treatment at the scene after suffering minor leg injuries. The crash ripped open a hole in the side of their house, leaving the couple's living room open to the elements.

A structural engineer was called to assess the damage to the property.

After surveying the damage to the side of the house, he gave the verdict that part of the home would have to be rebuilt.

An eye-witness, who saw the aftermath of the crash and wanted to remain anonymous, said: "It is very unfortunate.

"They have now got a hole in the side of their house so you can see into their living room from the road."

The couple were too upset to speak about the ordeal.
