Massive investment at one of Gloucester's premier schools continues as it plans to shell out £750,000 for a new performing arts centre.

King's School hopes to transform its old "gloomy" school hall into a high-tech centre for the arts.

Complete with springboard floors, a stage, light rigging and sound system with speakers, the hope is the renovations will further encourage the independent school's strong record in music, drama and singing.

The hall is more than 100 years old and at one stage was the only room the school had.

As it has expanded, the hall has become neglected and is now primarily used as a gym space.

But with the building of a £2million sports hall three years ago, attention has now been turned to what can be done with the school's oldest building.

Headteacher Alistair MacNaughton said it was a room with a long history.

"It has that kind of pedigree to it. The school has spread out in recent years and it has been used as an old gym but has become a rather gloomy space," he said.

"We began to think that we could make better use of it."

Mr MacNaughton, who has led the school for eight years, is optimistic they will receive planning permission soon and will start renovating in June and have it complete by autumn this year.

He said there was gathering excitement about the project.

"I think everyone is very enthusiastic about it," he said.

"I think they agree that having invested in sport it was the right time for the performing arts to get that support."

The school, which has 540 students, ranging in age from three to 18, has always had a strong association with music and its pupils perform as part of Gloucester Cathedral's Choir.

"Music is strong but drama is also very strong too, added Mr MacNaughton.

"We have an amazing record of pupils going on to some of the best performing arts schools like the Royal Academy of Dance and Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

"We feel it should play a large part of our curriculum as it builds students' self-confidence."

Once the revamp has completed Gloucester Cathedral are being invited to use the facilities as well as a number of community groups.
