No quick Forest Green exit for Lee Hughes, despite James Marwood deal

The arrival of James Marwood at Forest Green will not pave the way for Lee Hughes to make a cut-price move to Kidderminster Harriers.

Former Gateshead striker Marwood has now passed a medical and completed his move to the New Lawn, signing an 18-month contract.

However The Citizen understands that Rovers are in no hurry to offload Hughes to the Harriers, who want to re-sign the veteran either on loan or on a permanent short-term deal.

The 38-year-old, who is among Nailsworth club's top earners but has found himself out of favour, has been publicly courted by Kidderminster manager Gary Whild.

Speaking prior to his side's weekend defeat at Chester, Whild said: "We would like Lee here and for the lad it's perfect.

"He only lives 10 minutes away. He's got a young family so it would work out well.

"I believe that Lee is in talks with Forest Green Rovers, so we'll wait and see what happens."

Hughes began his professional career at Aggborough more than two decades ago, scoring 70 goals in 139 appearances between 1994 and 1997 before joining West Bromwich Albion.

Ady Pennock has so far declined to comment on Kidderminster's pursuit of the former £5 million man, but the Rovers boss has made no secret of his delight at capturing Marwood.

The 24-year-old, released by Scottish Premiership strugglers St Mirren, can play out wide or as a central striker and bagged 15 goals for Gateshead in the Conference last season.

He is the son of former Arsenal and Sheffield Wednesday winger Brian Marwood, who seemingly played a significant role in the deal.

Pennock explained: "Brian and I are very good friends so we've kept in touch about James' situation.

"I spoke to him when he left Gateshead in the summer and flew up to Scotland for talks."

An unplayable pitch at Alfreton Town meant Forest Green were without a fixture in the Vanarama Conference on Saturday.

An inspection was carried out at 9.20am at the Impact Arena following snow and sub-zero overnight temperatures in Derbyshire, and the game was subsequently postponed.

No new date has yet been set for the match, which was the only one in the division to fall foul of the weather at the weekend.

Kidderminster's 1-0 reverse at Chester means Rovers remain only two points shy of the play-off places, and Pennock's men have games in hand on all but two of the six clubs above them in the table.
