A 30-second video that cost just £10 to make could net a British filmmaker £660k if it gets screened during the Super Bowl.

James Bedford's comic advert for tortilla chip giant Doritos is in the running to be screened during the TV event of the year, which would mean a bumper pay cheque for the 40-year-old.

Mr Bedford's entry into Doritos' 'Crash the Super Bowl' beat off stiff competition from 5,000 clips around the world to be named as the only Briton in the final ten.

He found out when on the side of a road when his car broke down Hollywood actress Elizabeth Banks called him up to tell him.

Mr Bedford said: "I picked up the phone it was Elizabeth Banks speaking - I didn't realise who it was but she's a really big star in America.

"She told me I'd got through to the final and I couldn't believe it - I was super excited.

"I really didn't expect to get this far."

The 30-second video sees Mr Bedford, who acts in the video himself, angling at a lake in Longparish near Andover while eating a packet of Doritos crisps.

With a comedic musical backdrop, a fish then leaps out of the lake and bounds towards James, before they both start screaming at each other.

The fish - which was a plastic prop brought to life by puppetry and Mr Bedford's computer software skills - then clasps his fin around the top of the bag of tortilla chips, before hopping off into the lake with them.

The winner, due to be announced later this month, will receive $1million (£660,000) have their video screened in front of more than 60,000 fans and 115 million more watching on TV around the world at the NFL extravaganza in Arizona's University of Phoenix Stadium on February 1.
