EXCITED youngsters from the King's School delved into the past and became Victorians for the day.

Year 2 pupils visited the Folk Museum in Gloucester, where they were transported back in time by more than 100 years in a role-playing session.

They dressed up in full costume for their lessons, which took place in the museum's classroom, which has old-fashioned desks, slates for the children to write on, a blackboard, an abacus and other Victorian paraphernalia.

The day started with outside drill exercises and hand and shoe inspections. Back in the classroom, the children undertook a typical Victorian registration, followed by lessons of arithmetic, reading and writing.

The children had to take care not to slouch, talk in class or give an incorrect answer, as these were the main misdemeanours in the classroom.

Pupil Harry said: "The teacher was so strict, my knees were knocking together."

The session finished with the schoolteacher back to her friendly self and the children had the chance to ask questions and discuss what had happened in the classroom.

Class teacher Natalie Coates said: "The children thoroughly enjoyed dressing up as Victorian children and experiencing what life would have been like in the classroom.

"I think they were all relieved to return to the year 2015."
