Notorious Rhys Shardlow, 21, who was once described as Gloucester's public enemy number one, has been jailed again for his 44th criminal conviction.

At Gloucester Crown court Shardlow, who has been living at his father's home in Chestnut close, Welland, nr Malvern since he was last released from prison in Oct last year, admitted dishonestly handling a Suzuki motorcycle stolen from Abbeymead, Gloucester.

He was jailed for four months by Judge Jamie Tabor QC who told him he had now gained a reputation in the city as a 'fence' able to dispose of stolen goods on behalf of thieves and burglars.

Prosecutor Janine Wood said the Suzuki DRZ 400 worth £1,600 was stolen from owner Robert Gill's home in Abbeymead on 19th Nov last year and has not been recovered.

It was taken sometime between midnight and 5am and a witness saw it being pushed by someone into Lady Chapel road where it was left in as parking space. At 11.30am Shardlow and another man were seen taking it away and shortly afterwards were spotted in a Boxer van in the city.

At 12.30pm the same day Shardlow was one of three men who took the motorcycle into JRS Autos in Ledbury and tried to sell it for £200 nbut the owner realised it was worth more like £1,800 in his estimation and told them to go away, said Ms Wood.

What happened to it after that was not known, she said.

Judge Tabor commented "He's 21 and this is his 44th court appearance so he is nearing his half century! Most of his offences are for dishonesty. His list of offences for dishonesty is multiplying."

Sarah Jenkins, defending, "His reputation is such that he is somebody who is approached in relation to this type of offence. He was at this time staying with his dad although I think things were not particularly happy as far as that was concerned.

"He was leaving home early in the morning and returning last thing at night which indicates he was not particularly welcome as far as that address was concerned.

"He tells me fairly frankly that he was using quite a lot of cannabis. That is worrying because he has not been out of custody for very long before he returned to that habit."

Judge Tabor told Shardlow "We have looked at each other too often over the past few years. You have now acquired your 44th conviction, aged 21, which is something not to be proud of. You are committing offence after offence of dishonesty. Each time you do it you cause upset and loss to members of the public.

"The public are utterly sick of this. You now have a reputation as a fence. People are coming to you to sell goods because they know that you know where you can get rid of things.

"You can go on like this if you like but if you do you will spend most of your life in prison.

"Don't come back again this year - it will be a very long time for you if you do."

"Ok, thank you," said Shardlow, who appeared via video link from Hewell Prison in the Midlands.
