PUPILS travelled back in time and embraced the Victorian ages for the day.

Year one pupils from Finlay Community School are learning about Victorian times as part of their term topic, titled chalkboard and chimney sweeps.

They spent the day dressed as Victorians and doing their work on chalk boards.

Debbie Johnson, school secretary, said: "Class teacher Sarah Allen rearranged the classroom, they spent the day using chalkboards and they were in a strict environment.

"This allowed them to compare the difference between going to school then and now.

"Year 2 pupils also had a similar day."

A teenager has been warned he could face jail after he admitted intending to supply three types of drugs.

Sam Delahay pleaded guilty to being in possession of cannabis, amphetamine and designer drug mephedrone all with intent to supply on November 6, last year.

Judge Jamie Tabor QC told the 18-year-old of Bunting Hills in Nailsworth to be back before Gloucester Crown Court on Wednesday, February 11 to be sentenced.

He told him: "I can make you no promises as to your sentence. Drug dealing is very serious."

Delahay pleaded not guilty to a further charge of attempting to possess with intent to supply 299 MCMA tables.

Prosecutor Janine Wood said the pleas were acceptable.

Gloucester Flower Arrangement Society brightens up Gloucestershire Royal Hospital with floral displays

Splashes of colour were added to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital thanks to an array of flower displays.

Members from the Gloucester Flower Arrangement Society visited the hospital where they put up several flower displays around the public waiting areas and clinics.

Jean Butt from the society said: "Throughtout the year the Gloucester Flower Arrangement Society puts up four main flower arrangements at Gloucester Royal Hospital. Naturally these arrangements are all carried out in silk flowers and foliage and are changed to match the seasons. The club has a team of dedicated flower arrangers who go into the hospital regularly to change the arrangements.

"However at Christmas time we really go to town and produce as many as a dozen arrangements in various public places and clinics through the hospital. When working we often have visitors coming up to us complimenting us on the flowers and say how much they brighten up the area.

"The flower club makes the work we do at the hospital part of our charity work and from time to time we purchase new materials so we can continue to help make a visit to the hospital a better experience."

Jamie Oliver's cheese on toast recipe sparks fire hazard concern

Jamie Oliver has revealed the secret to perfect toast, only to get a panning online and spark concerns of causing a fire risk.

The celebrity chef insists you should dispel with something as mundane as a toaster, use sourdough and squash it in a frying pan with a bottle of HP Sauce. For cheese on toast, he has "turned the toaster on its side, put cheese on bread and slid it in" - to the condemnation of fire safety experts.

Here's his recipe, as told to the Guardian, in full:

We all like Marmite in our family, but sometimes I have a ripe tomato and a bit of salt on toast. In the past, I have turned the toaster on its side, put cheese on bread and slid it in so it toasts on one side and melts on the other. It's a bit of a jiggle but it works. There is a divide in our family about how to make toast on an Aga. My Mrs likes to put the bread on the hot side in an Aga toaster, so you get funny little white lines – pointless, in my opinion. I put the bread on the cooler side so it gets super crispy. But my favourite way of making toast is in a frying pan. Here's how:

1. Sourdough, which is spongy, toasts up a treat. It stays fresh for a week and then you can grill it for bruschetta or dry it out for what the Italians call pangritata to liven up stews, soups and salads. We waste about 40% of bread in Britain but once you've tasted pangritata you'll never throw bread away again. Put a slice in a hot, dry non-stick pan and cook for a minute and a half on each side or until golden and crisp. I do it by smell – the equivalent of roasting coffee beans.

2. After I've toasted one side, I like to turn it over and put something heavy on the bread – try a bottle of HP sauce – to squash it flat. It ensures the entire surface area is toasted for maximum crunch.

3. Get the butter or marg on straight away. I am a butter person and really good butter is always a pleasure. Make sure it is at room temperature – it's a pain if your toast goes cold while you're trying to spread it. Then your toast awaits your next embellishment: a nice bit of jam or Marmite.

4. How I cut toast depends on my mood. I like soldiers if I am nostalgic or have an egg to dip into. Cutting toast into rectangles is belt and braces when I am in a rush. But if I want to be more upmarket, I'll cut it into triangles. I don't cut off the crusts because a) it's a waste and b) most of the nutrients of any bread are in the crust. Plus, I like the contrast of the soft and the crunchy bits, but, if you want to be wussy, you can cut 'em off.

MP assistant's controversial Prophet tweet condemned by Gloucestershire rivals

A controversial tweet by a Gloucestershire MP's assistant about the Prophet has been roundly condemned.

Comments made by Tewkesbury MP Laurence Robertson's assistant Mark Calway have been strongly criticised by Liberal Democrat Alistair Cameron.

Mr Cameron, who will stand against Conservative MP Mr Robertson in the General Election, said the comments made by Mr Calway would cause "deep offense".

And he suggested that he would not have anyone on his team who was capable of making such remarks.

In the controversial tweet – that has already been roundly criticised by Labour and Ukip politicans in Tewkesbury - Mr Calway refered to the Prophet as a "child abuser".

The tweet has been deleted and Mr Calway said: "I did make the comment. It was my personal view. It is not the view of Laurence or the party."

Mr Robertson said because Mr Calway had apologised and deleted the tweet, he would take no further action against him.

But Mr Cameron has suggested that more action needs to be taken.

He said: "Whilst everyone has a right to free speech it is clearly wrong to make remarks which will so obviously cause deep offence to people who support a particular religion.

"In this case, the religion is Islam but I also object to people making deeply offensive remarks about Christianity, Judaism or other religions.

"The Muslims I know are peaceful and kind people and they will understandably be upset by these comments.

"People do have a right to freedom of speech but we should also show respect and tolerance of the views of others.

"We are living in a very difficult time at present and it is especially important for all of us to respect the faiths and beliefs of different people so that we can get on together in this world.

"I am pleased that Mark has withdrawn the tweet and apologised. I personally would not be able to employ someone who is capable of making such remarks."

The comments by Mr Calway were roundly condemned.

Ed Buxton, Labour's MP hopeful for Tewkesbury, said: "The comments that have been made by Mark Calway assistant to Tewkesbury MP Laurence Robertson, on Twitter, are disgusting.

"They seek to create tension at a time, when everyone should be seeking calm.

"There is no excuse. I hope Laurence Robertson MP will come out and condemn - in the strongest possible way."

Stuart Adair, Ukip's MP candidate in Tewkesbury, tweeted: "This is disgraceful!! I can't believe that anyone would say this publically, let alone a representative of our MP."

Laurence Robertson said in a statement on Friday: "Earlier today, my constituency assistant, Mark Calway, issued a tweet.

"It was issued without my knowledge. He informed me of the incident when I returned to my office at about 3pm this afternoon.

"He immediately accepted that he had issued it on his own behalf, and that he was wrong to word it in the way that he did.

"He has since withdrawn the tweet and apologised unreservedly for any offence caused.

"Although he issued the tweet on his own behalf, I regret that he sent it out and have let him know that I find it unacceptable.

"However, given his withdrawal of the tweet, and unreserved apology, I do not intend to take any further action against him."

Driveway pattern 'a signal to cowboy traders of an easy target', police warn

This pattern in an elderly couple's driveway is believed to be a signal to cowboy traders that the homeowners are an easy target.

An elderly couple who were tricked into letting a rogue builder pave their driveway were mystified when a series of dodgy tradesmen kept calling at their home in Devon.

The visits took place over five years but the homeowners could not work out why they were being singled out.

But now police have the answer – the original builder had left a 'code' pattern in the driveway to tip off other cowboy traders that the owners were an easy target.

The builder, who massively overcharged them, at £4,000, left the job unfinished in August 2009 but at the centre of the driveway he had placed a squared pattern of different coloured blocks.

The house calls included four builders offering to re-do the work the original trader had left unfinished.

in November a man told the victims that they were entitled to £14,000 compensation for the poor work but claimed he would need £6,000 in order to release the cash.

The couple asked the man to call back and went straight to the police.

Officers are now warning other homeowners to check their driveways for unwanted patterns. A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "There are grounds to suspect it is there to identify the house as a potential target for these type of offences.

"Each time the victim has had visitors offering work the men attending have changed. He does not have any details for the men, but states they have been a mixture of English, Romanian and Irish males."

Ditch the cigarettes to see comet Lovejoy this weekend, say astronomer Geoff Wyatt

Astronomer, Geoff Wyatt, has advised Stargazers to ditch the cigarettes this weekend in the hope to catch a glimpse of comet Lovejoy.

It is believed the glowing green comet is making its closest approach to Earth at the moment, a sight that will not be seen again for 8,000 years.

Mr Wyatt said smoking affects the blood supply to the optic nerve and reduces night vision. He also advised getting away from light pollution to improve the view.

Although it can be incredibly hard to spot the green comet, all you need to do is look for the easy-to-find constellation of Orion, and swing your eyes to the right (about 20 degrees) and up slightly up.

Egg left at crime scene, police scramble resources on tiny island 'like Heartbeat but less frenetic'

A fried egg was bizarrely left behind after a shed break-in in a tiny island community whose police force is quickly gaining cult status.

It is the latest incident on the Isles of Scilly which has seen the beat team become something of an internet sensation for its quirky investigations, reports the Cornishman newspaper.

The Isles of Scilly Police Facebook page has just topped 5,060 followers – well more than double the actual population of the islands.

The police admitted that the level of interest was "absurd" and in a light-hearted message to followers they said: "This site seems to have just exceeded 5,000 followers which is quite frankly absurd.

"This is now officially the most viewed British Police Facebook Page west of Cornwall.

"If you have participated in liking, sharing or commenting on this page in the last year there is little that can be done to help you, but thanks all the same."

They add: "There is a small team of us here but we do feel swelled in ranks by your virtual presence.

"We are hoping for a sober 2015 with loads of dull policing stuff to report and ask for you help in managing. Please do not go away, normal service may never be resumed."

There are three Devon and Cornwall police officers on the islands, a community support officer, two special constables and a station cat called Mowgli.

Sergeant Colin Taylor – who has a popular Twitter account with more than 4,400 followers – describes the job as "like Heartbeat but less frenetic".

In the case of the egg, Sergeant Taylor said: "Somebody has forced open the door to the football club shed at the playing field next to the school.

"It is fairly evident that this was done sometime over Tuesday evening and most probably to get a football out for a kick around.

"Regrettably however the door was damaged in the process as can be seen in the picture with the bottom of the door split.

"There are few clues as to how this came to happen other than a fried egg was left at the scene."

He said he would be talking to children at the school assembly and added that he hoped the offence could be resolved amicably.

Speculation is mounting that the forthcoming blockbuster, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, could actually be two movies.

The blockbuster, due for release in May 2016, could actually be split into two separate films, Enter the Knight and Dawn Of Justice – released several months apart.

If this is true we could even see our first dose of Batman-Superman action before the year is out.

Enter The Knight reportedly tipped for release on October 23, 2015 and the follow-up set to land on March 25, 2016.

Batman v Superman will see Henry Cavill reprise the role of the man of steel, joined by Ben Affleck as the Caped Crusader.

Humphreys salutes ice cool James Hook following Gloucester win

$

David Humphreys has paid tribute James Hook after the fly-half kept his cool to slot a long-range penalty to beat Saracens with the final kick of the game.

It looked as though Gloucester would be left empty handed after Saracens broke out and appeared to score through Chris Ashton.

But the England wing was adjudged to be offside and play was called back to the halfway line with Gloucester awarded a penalty.

Hook stepped up with less than 20 seconds on the clock and showed nerves of steel to split the posts from more than 50 metres away.

Humphreys said: "What you saw at the final whistle was unbelievable relief. It was from the point of thinking Chris Ashton had scored a try to realising the chance was there to kick a penalty – it was an interesting last few minutes.

"James had a difficult first half off the tee but like the whole team in terms of the performance he showed a huge amount of character to stand up and put himself there to ultimately win us the game.

"That's why you spend hours out on the pitch to kick those goals in a big match against a team as good as Saracens.

"We all had our fingers crossed and our eyes closed. We're very fortunate with Billy Twelvetrees, James Hook, Rob Cook, Billy Burns, Greig Laidlaw all being top goal-kickers.

"But if you stood and watched them every week you woul know no one works harder than James in terms of practise so I had every confidence he would knock it over."

Dan Robson and Callum Braley both scored sensational tries in the unlikely victory but Gloucester have been left counting the cost.

Both Ben Morgan and Nick Wood were stretchered off with what appeared serious ankle and neck injuries respectively.

The extent of the damage is not yet known with both players being taken to hospital during the match but Humphreys excepts a clear picture by Monday.

Professional Gloucester car thief jailed after stealing caravan, two delivery vans and a taxi in crimewave

$

"A menace to road users" and professional car thief has been jailed for 26 months for a string of offences including stealing a £20,000 caravan, a parcel delivery van and taxi.

Christopher Thomas stole the caravan, which was the owner's "pride and joy", to order and opportunistically jumped into the other vehicles which had keys in the ignition while the drivers were distracted and sped off.

Gloucester Crown Court heard that Thomas, a prolific criminal and father-of-three, had spiralled into drugs use since the death of his wife in 2008.

The 38-year-old, who was banned from driving, took the taxi while the driver was helping and elderly lady into the hairdressers and stole a parcel van while a worker was making a delivery.

Prosecutor James Bromige said the caravan had been secured with a lock and blocked in behind a car at a Ross-on-Wye driveway on July 26, 2013.

He said it had been bought in Germany for 25,000 Euros and was the owner's pride and joy.

But when Mr Savage returned home he discovered the car blocking the caravan had been moved and the Hobby prestige gone.

Mr Bromige said Thomas was unaware that the caravan had a tracker which sent out a GPS signals once a day.

Less than 12 hours after it was stolen the vehicle was tracked down to Churchill Road in Cheltenham, but had £2,500 worth of damage.

Riley Stevens, 44, of The Stables, Southend Lane, Newent had bought the caravan off Thomas for £600 as a wedding present for his 21-year-old son, Jake, of the same address.

Mr Bromige said Richard Cooper, 30, of Spoonbill Close in Quedgley had agreed to store the caravan for Jake at his business yard in Cheltenham and only realised it was stolen when it arrived.

Despite his arrest, Thomas' crimewave continued on May 20, 2013 when he spotted a parcel delivery van in Hopewell Street, Gloucester with the ignition in while the driver was dropping something off.

Mr Bromige said despite being near a school and in the daytime, witnesses said Thomas drove off "like a lunatic" before the van was discovered in Abbeymead Avenue.

And on August 29, 2014 Thomas was at it again – this time with friend and former heroin addict, Michael Smith, 33, of Lysander Way in Moreton-in-Marsh.

The prosecutor said: "A taxi driver in Malvern had a VW Passat worth around £5,000. He was helping an elderly lady passenger into the hairdressers when Thomas jumped in.

"He ran a red light and drove persistently on the wrong side of the road.

"Smith had driven him to the scene in a Volvo and followed Thomas, but did not drive in a dangerous manner."

But the pair carried out the same ploy again on September 2, this year when another delivery van, and 20 parcels due for delivery were taken from Painswick Road, this time with Smith in the driver's seat and Thomas following.

Judge Jamie Tabor QC said sadly he knew Thomas, who has 36 previous convictions of 86 offences, "too well".

He told him: "You are a professional car thief. I have no doubt you stole the caravan to order.

"Undeterred by your arrest you continued to offend no doubt partially due to your heroin addiction.

"Frankly you are a menace to other road users."

Thomas pleaded guilty to theft of the caravan, aggravated taking a vehicle without consent, theft of both the parcels and a mobile phone, theft of the taxi, dangerous driving and three counts of driving while disqualified and was jailed and given a two year driving ban.

The judge deferred sentencing Smith for six months and said he wanted him to provide clear drugs tests and get a job in that time after he pleaded guilty to theft of the taxi, taking a vehicle without consent, theft of the parcels and handling a stolen bike, which was later found at his home by police.

Riley Stevens was given an eight month prison sentence suspended for two years and ordered to pay a £1,000 fine, £200 costs and carry out 200 hours unpaid work after he admitted handling stolen goods.

His son Jake, who pleaded guilty to the same offence was given a six month suspended sentence, and ordered to pay and carry out the same amounts.

Cooper, who was described as a hardworking man with his own business, was ordered to pay a £1,000 fine and £200 costs after also admitting handling stolen goods.

Holm Truths: The nine-year-old half-brother who would have been so proud of Darren Dawidiuk's century

$

As Darren Dawidiuk reached a century of Gloucester appearances against Saracens last night some of his younger brother's final words were truly vindicated.

The Cornish hooker was weighing up a contract offer from the Cherry and Whites back in 2009 but was unsure whether to accept the challenge of the top flight.

That was until his half-brother Jack Mylam told him to seize the opportunity of a lifetime and do the Truro-based family proud by following his dream.

Unfortunately Jack never got to see his elder brother pull on the famous Cherry and White jersey.

In 2011, following an 11-month battle against an inoperable brain tumour, the nine-year-old passed away in his mother's arms at the Little Bridge Children's Hospice in Barnstaple.

But he lives in the memory of Dawidiuk every time he takes to the field.

Dawidiuk said: "My brother is the one person I definitely think about every time I'm going out to play. He never had the opportunity to watch me play for Gloucester but saw me at the Cornish Pirates.

"He was very proud of what I did and during his chemotherapy while I was being offered a contract by Gloucester he was one of the people telling me to go for it and to make the family proud.

"So I'm extremely proud to reach 100 appearances, it's a massive milestone for myself and Jonny (May).

"You never think about how many games you will make, you just enjoy your time while you're here. But the next thing you know you're close to 100.

"Playing for Gloucester has given my family something else to focus on, even though we will never stop grieving or missing Jack.

"Whatever I can do to make them proud and happy here I will do and that's been one of my main focuses at the club over the last few years."

Family has always been important to Dawidiuk and he returns to Cornwall whenever the season allows him to.

Summers are spent surfing with his other brother but he has found a new family in Gloucester.

It has been six years since Dawidiuk made the move from Cornish Pirates and he has proved to be a reliable, durable and abrasive acquisition.

He has had to play second fiddle behind internationals like Scott Lawson, Huia Edmonds and now Richard Hibbard during his time at Kingsholm, but is happy to give everything he has for the Cherry and White cause.

He said: "Ever since I started playing as a kid I always wanted to play professional rugby so it's always been the ambition.

"Gloucester is a great club and they've looked after me so well. This club is my second family and I've made so many close friends here – it's a nice place to be.

"It's the only Premiership club I've played for, they're the team that gave me my first chance and I see myself as a very loyal person and just want to show the club how much they mean to me.

"Everyone keeps telling me how the club keep bringing in these big-name international hookers but I'm the one who seems to be sticking around.

"Obviously I'm a club man at the moment. I haven't represented England or anything but whenever I pull on the jersey I just want to do well for Gloucester."

Dawidiuk has been limited to just 12 appearances this season but retained the number two jersey for last night's clash with Saracens following a combative performance against Exeter Chiefs last week.

The keen surfer thrives upon competition and reckons the challenge presented by Hibbard and Aleki Lutui is bringing the best out of all three players.

He added: "It's been tough for me but the hooker position is very competitive with the likes of Hibbs (Hibbard) and Aleki.

"I've had a lot to prove to the coaches because it's a new coaching team that have come in and they don't know who I am.

"I'm not an international; I'm a club man and have had to really prove myself in training and the A-games.

"But Hibbs and Aleki have been great with me. I've learnt quite a bit from those two and am still learning from them. I'm enjoying the competition between the three of us.

"I'm grateful to have them here and it's only going to make us better as players and as a team."

Gift to Millbrook Academy academy will save lives

A DEFIBRILLATOR presentation was held at Millbrook Academy in Brockworth yesterday.

The academy has benefited from sponsorship funds raised by the Rotary Club, through the 'Rotary Saves Lives' project, to enable it to receive an automatic defibrillator .

Richard Purdon and Dr Colin Prottey were among the members from the Rotary Clubs of Gloucestershire in attendance.

They were joined by academy principal Jan Scott, the MP for Tewkesbury Lawrence Robertson, and Heather Strawbridge, chairman of South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust.

Ms Strawbridge said: "Sudden cardiac arrest is more common than many people realise and approximately 100,000 people of all ages in the UK suffer an attack each year'.

Mr Robertson said he was delighted to be part of the initiative.

He added: "Being such a rural county means that sometimes ambulances take longer to reach patients.

"It is fantastic that these defibrillators are being installed at schools and colleges."

As Gloucestershire is predominantly rural, and ambulance waiting times can sometimes be longer as a result, defibrillators are seen as vital in order to prevent lives being lost through cardiac arrest or heart problems as traffic delays can cost vital minutes.

The county has been at the centre of several high profile deaths as a result of cardiac arrest in recent years, including Ty Townsley and Dominic Cullen.

Longlevens footballer Mark Moore was only saved thanks to paramedics playing on a nearby pitch when his heart failed in 2012.

Jan Scott, the academy's principal showed her appreciation towards the initiative.

"Thank you to all the agencies involved in making this defibrillator available to everyone at Millbrook Academy. Partnerships like this are valuable and really do help communities," she said.

CHELSEA opened up a two-point lead on Manchester City at the top of the Premier League after beating Newcastle United 2-0 yesterday.

Despite the result, caretaker manager John Carver did his hopes of landing the Newcastle job on a permanent basis no harm as they dominated much of the first half but Oscar struck two minutes before the break and Diego Costa added a second in the 59th minute.

Man City, who started the day behind Chelsea on alphabetical order, were held to a 1-1 draw at Everton.

Alan Pardew won his first league game in charge of Crystal Palace as they beat in-form Tottenham 2-1 to move out of the relegation zone, while Tony Pulis also enjoyed a winning start in the Premier League with West Brom with Saido Berahino scoring the only goal of the game against Hull City, who moved back into the bottom three.

Burnley climbed out of the drop zone with a 2-1 win over QPR, who are yet to pick up an away point and are now one place off the foot of the table, but bottom side Leicester City boosted their survival hopes with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa in the Midlands derby.

Sunderland are just one point outside the bottom three after they lost 1-0 at home to Liverpool, while West Ham drew 1-1 at Swansea City.

In a week of special events, including a live episode, viewers will find out who killed Lucy Beale and a more dramatic storyline which will see favourite Dot Branning arrested and jailed for the murder of her son Nick Cotton.

That will come after he's named as the killer of pensioner Reg Cox, whose death was the focus of the show's very first episode, which aired on February 19 in 1985.

It is rumoured that Dot will kill him after learning that it was Nick who tampered with the brakes on the car that Roxy was using to drive newlywed Ronnie to the hospital when she went into labour on New Year's Day.

Fat Cat Day marked in Gloucestershire - top bosses earn more in first three working days of 2015 than most do in a year

Millionaire's shortbread was dished out on Saturday to mark so-called Fat Cat Day - the third working day of the year, by which time the chief executive of a FTSE 100 company has already earned more than the average national salary for the year.

Members of Stroud Constituency Labour Party took to the streets on Saturday in Stroud, Stonehouse, Kings Stanley and Dursley handing out the shortbread and leaflets.

A FTSE 100 boss earns an average £4.72million. The average British worker took home £27,000 in 2014.

"This is not the politics of envy but it is pointing out the growing division in society between the very rich who are growing richer and the rest of us," said Stroud Labour chairman, Dick Greenslade.

"£4.72million is more than many of us will be paid in a lifetime. Company boss Martin Sorrell (the chief executive of WPP) saw his pay increase in June last year from £17.5million to £29.8million last year while public sector pay rises were a mere one per cent - so a nurse would have seen an increase of around £250."
